Common questions about round brilliant diamonds
Why does a round diamond cost more per carat than other shapes?
For two reasons: cutting a round from the rough crystal loses more weight than most fancy shapes, and rounds attract the strongest demand of any shape. As a result, an oval, cushion or princess of the same weight and grades usually costs less per carat. The price ranges on our diamond prices page, drawn from today’s stock, show the gap.
How big is a 1, 1.5 or 2 carat round diamond?
A well-cut round measures about 6.4 to 6.5 mm across at 1 carat, 7.3 to 7.4 mm at 1.5 carats and 8.1 to 8.2 mm at 2 carats. A stone cut too deep hides weight in its body and looks smaller from above, so compare the measurements on the report, not just the weight. Our guide to carat size on the hand shows the difference.
Which colour and clarity should I choose for a round diamond?
The round hides faint colour and small inclusions better than any other shape, so you rarely need the top grades. G or H colour usually faces up white in white gold or platinum, and many VS2 and SI1 rounds are clean to the naked eye. Put the budget into an Excellent cut first, then confirm on the 360° video that no inclusion is visible.
Round or oval: which should I choose?
Both are brilliant cuts with lively sparkle. The round returns the most light and has no bow-tie, the darker band some elongated stones show across the centre. An oval cut diamond looks larger than a round of the same weight, lengthens the finger and usually costs less per carat. Choose the round for pure brilliance, the oval for size and a slimmer look.
