Radiant or emerald cut: what is the difference?
Both are rectangles with trimmed corners, but they handle light differently. The emerald has long, parallel step facets that give calm flashes and show inclusions clearly, so it demands higher clarity. What ratio should a radiant cut have?
As typical guidance, a radiant from 1.00 to about 1.05 reads square, bold and contemporary. Rectangular radiants often sit around 1.20 to 1.35, which lengthens the finger and suits a solitaire or a three-stone design. Neither is better: the ratio is a matter of taste. Each report gives the length and width, so the ratio is easy to check before you reserve.
Is a radiant cut cheaper than a round diamond?
Generally, yes, per carat. A radiant keeps more of the rough crystal when it is cut, and demand is highest for rounds, so a radiant of the same weight and grades usually costs less. How do I judge a radiant cut without a cut grade?
GIA gives an overall cut grade only to round brilliants, so a radiant’s report shows polish and symmetry but no cut grade. Look for Excellent or Very Good on both and a depth that is not excessive, since a very deep radiant hides weight and looks smaller. Then judge brightness on the 360° video: an elongated radiant should not show a heavy dark band across its centre.
