An HRD certified diamond is a natural diamond graded by HRD, the European grading laboratory, with a numbered report you can check yourself. Many of the larger stones in our Beirut stock carry HRD reports, so if you are looking at a [1 carat diamond](https://diamonds.com.lb/1-carat-diamonds-lebanon/) or above, you will meet HRD paper often. Below are the HRD-graded [loose diamonds](https://diamonds.com.lb/loose-diamonds/) we hold today, followed by what the report records, how it compares with [GIA certified diamonds](https://diamonds.com.lb/gia-certified-diamonds-lebanon/), and how to verify one before you reserve.

> **Quick answer:** An HRD certified diamond has been graded by HRD, the independent European laboratory, on a numbered report that records its carat weight, colour, clarity, proportions, polish, symmetry, measurements and fluorescence. You can check that number on HRD's own website. diamonds.com.lb in Beirut sells only natural diamonds graded by HRD or GIA, each filmed in 360° video.

## What HRD is

HRD is the Hoge Raad voor Diamant, the Diamond High Council, and its laboratory is the European grading authority of the diamond trade. Like GIA, it has no stake in selling the stone: its graders examine the diamond, record what they find and issue a report tied to that one stone by its number.

HRD grades to an exacting standard, and dealers read its reports with the same seriousness as a GIA report. Diamonds reach Beirut through the international diamond pipeline, already graded by whichever major laboratory their owner chose. In our stock that means HRD or GIA and nothing else: we do not sell stones graded by little-known laboratories, and we never sell on an in-house "certificate".

## What an HRD report records

An HRD report is titled Natural Diamond Grading Report, and it describes your stone in measurable terms:

- **Report number and date**: the reference you use to check the report online.
- **Shape and carat weight**: the weight is given to the hundredth of a carat.
- **Colour grade**: on the same D to Z scale GIA uses, printed with a traditional name beside the letter, such as "rare white (G)".
- **Clarity grade**: from LC (loupe clean) through VVS, VS and SI down to P1, P2 and P3, with a diagram marking where the inclusions sit.
- **Cut**: three grades, each on a scale from excellent to fair: proportions (given for round brilliants only), polish and symmetry.
- **Technical information**: measurements in millimetres, total depth, table width, crown height, pavilion depth, girdle and culet.
- **Fluorescence**: how the stone reacts under ultraviolet light, described by strength, from nil to strong.
- **Natural origin**: a statement that the stone has been identified as a natural diamond.

Read together, these lines are a fingerprint of the stone. They let you compare two diamonds honestly and confirm that the stone you collect is the one described. Every colour and clarity grade is set out in full in the [diamond colour and clarity chart](https://diamonds.com.lb/diamond-colour-clarity-chart/).

## HRD vs GIA in practice

For a buyer in Lebanon, the difference between the two laboratories is smaller than the difference between two stones. In practice:

- **Same colour letters.** Both grade colour from D to Z. HRD adds a traditional name beside the letter; GIA prints the letter alone.
- **Slightly different clarity names.** A stone with no inclusions at ten times magnification is LC on an HRD report, where GIA writes Flawless or Internally Flawless. HRD's lowest grades are P1 to P3, where GIA writes I1 to I3.
- **Cut reported differently.** GIA gives a round brilliant one overall cut grade alongside polish and symmetry; HRD grades proportions, polish and symmetry as three separate lines. On a round, excellent on all three is read by the trade as a top-cut stone.
- **Recognition, not rigour.** GIA is the most widely recognised name worldwide, and HRD is strongest across Europe and the trade. If two stones are truly equal and one is GIA, that broader recognition is a quiet advantage. It is not a difference in the strictness of the grading.
- **Same price benchmark.** The Rapaport list does not change with the laboratory, and every stone we sell, HRD or GIA, shows where it sits against that list on its own page. [How we price](https://diamonds.com.lb/how-we-price/) explains the method.

Buy the better stone, whichever laboratory graded it. Our full comparison of [GIA vs HRD certificates](https://diamonds.com.lb/gia-vs-hrd-certificates/) covers the lines on each report that matter most.

## How to verify an HRD report

You never need to take our word for a grade. Checking an HRD report takes a minute:

1. Ask us on WhatsApp for the stone's certificate. We send it with the 360° video, and the report number is also shown on the stone's own page.
2. Type HRD's official website address into your browser yourself and open its online report check. Do not follow a link or QR code sent by any seller, ourselves included: reaching the laboratory by your own route is what makes the check meaningful.
3. Enter the report number and read the full result. The shape, carat weight, measurements, colour, clarity and the natural diamond statement should all match the paper and the stone's listing.

Our step-by-step guide to [verifying a GIA or HRD certificate online](https://diamonds.com.lb/how-to-verify-gia-hrd-certificate-online/) covers each step and the red flags that should end a sale. Making sure a particular stone is the one its report describes is the job of the seller's reputation, which is why buying from an established, reputable dealer matters as much as the online check.

## Common questions

### Is an HRD certificate as good as a GIA certificate?

Both are independent laboratories that grade to strict standards, and both reports can be verified online. GIA is the more widely recognised name worldwide, while HRD is strongest across Europe and the diamond trade. Neither grades loosely, so the better choice is simply the better stone, checked on its laboratory's own website.

### What does LC mean on an HRD report?

LC stands for loupe clean: a diamond with no inclusions visible to a trained grader at ten times magnification. It is HRD's top clarity grade and covers what GIA calls Flawless and Internally Flawless. Below it, HRD uses the familiar VVS, VS and SI grades, then P1 to P3 where GIA writes I1 to I3.

### How do I check an HRD diamond certificate?

Type HRD's official website address into your browser yourself, open its online report check and enter the report number printed on the certificate. The result should match the paper and the stone's listing line by line: shape, carat weight, measurements, colour, clarity and the statement that the diamond is natural. Never verify through a link a seller sends you.

### How is an HRD certified diamond priced?

Exactly like a GIA one: against the Rapaport list for its shape, carat weight, colour and clarity. Each stone's page at diamonds.com.lb shows the Rapaport list price, our price and the difference between them, so you can compare an HRD stone and a GIA stone on the same terms.

### Are your HRD certified diamonds natural?

Yes. diamonds.com.lb sells natural diamonds only, and every HRD-graded stone we hold comes with an HRD Natural Diamond Grading Report stating that it has been identified as a natural diamond. You can confirm that line yourself when you check the report number on HRD's website.

### Can I buy an HRD certified diamond from abroad?

Yes. You choose and verify the stone remotely, with its HRD certificate and 360° video sent on WhatsApp, and reserve it with a deposit. Delivery is within Greater Beirut only, so buyers living abroad collect by appointment in Beirut when they arrive. The page on [buying from abroad](https://diamonds.com.lb/diaspora/) explains each step.
